Why humans uniquely live long enough to become grandparents

How we live long enough and healthfully enough to become productive grandparents is an open question. A new study, however, points to the development of two gene variants in genes linked to dementia. And because these don’t show up in chimpanzees, our closest evolutionary relatives, we know the genes’ protective variants evolved to be uniquely human.
